When meeting a man named Dick Graham at a Christmas Tree lot one would have never expected the career of Photographer Dan Merkel. His images captured such beautiful water shots legends like Shaun Tomson, MR, PT, Michael Tomson and many more as Dan would put himself so deep just for one click on a roll of 35mm film to only reveal some of the most memorable images in Surfing Magazines history. I had spent time with Dan while filming Lost & Found as well have always kept in touch.
Today my phone will either ping me with texts of photos or calls as Dan tells me his latest locations and adventures as he chases the sun for the images he sees. Last week the pings started as Dan was shooting a pier at sunset in California. As I viewed the images I could see and am inspired as Dan is always exploring not only the exposure but he is expanding his vision thru technology. Its these moments when you see and artist continuing to follow his passions and express himself using the tools that are offered today. So one asks, How did he get that name? After speaking with Gerry Lopez he says he named Dan that because he would schlep his mountain of camera gear into ULUWATU everyday, sweated gallons then all the way out afterwards, for over 2+ miles each way.
Stay safe on the road Dan!
